I've always thought that getting a case for my iPod or cell phone was similar to getting plastic to cover your furniture. Sure it keeps it looking nice, but what's the point if it's at the expense of its basic utility?
With that preamble, my question is: is the design of the iPhone/iPod Touch such that it needs protection? Is it too slippery to use without something with better grip? Is the screen prone to scratches if there's no extra film over it?
I want to keep it as slim and light as possible, but if it's unsafe without a case I guess I'll start shopping around.
Thanks!

I find it a little slippy and hard to grip, esp using one hand. My IPT has a Speck case which I quite like, though my wife, (who now has the IPT) prefers it naked.
For my iPhone, after shopping around, I decided to get the Roots case. It's black rubbery/silicon, has a nice feel, is not too bulky, and comes with a rotating belt clip that is handy when traveling through airport security and you have to stash the phone in your briefcase or knapsack.

I agree, I ditched my case for that reason.

I guess that's it, huh? It's probably going to get dropped whatever you do... a case might keep it intact.

I had the original iPhone. Dropped it a bunch of times, but it was fine because it had a titanium case. The new one is plastic. Hence the protective cover I put over it.
